Whitewater Gospel Mission Outreach to the Navajo people
The crisis of Covid-19 has created new ways to show our Navajo believers that we do not just preach and teach to their spiritual needs, but we care about their physical need as well.
The virus has hit the Navajo nation harder than any other place in the USA based on population. Navajo Nation is the home of the largest American Indian tribe; and sprawls across northeast Arizona, New Mexico and Utah. The area of the reservation is over 27,000 square miles.
In a May 18,2020 news release CNN reported, “The Navajo Nation has surpassed New York and New Jersey for the highest per-capita coronavirus infection rate in the US -- another sign of Covid-19's disproportionate impact on minority communities.”
The area around Gallup, New Mexico was locked down for several days. Only residents of Gallup were permitted into town. The roads were blocked by State police, National Guard and Local police. Many Navajo depend on the water and food from Gallup. Part of the reason is that over one third of Navajo Nation does not have running water. There are only 16 small grocery stores within Navajo Nation which are running very low on food to sell to people who have money. Navajo Nation is bringing water trucks (both for people and animals) and semi loads of food to the 104 chapter houses scattered within the reservation. Some people are so isolated that special runs need to be made to provide for these people and animals at risk.
Whitewater Gospel Mission (WGM), by the grace and provision of the Lord Jesus Christ, has undertaken the responsibility to help meet part of this urgent need caused by shortages. WGM provided care packages to the families we have who come to bible studies, church and the Whitewater Bible Institute. As the Lord continues to provide, we will have more care packages for those currently being helped and for additional families who have students that would be attending the local government boarding school closed due to the virus.
Our first distribution included 45 families with some basic foods. We have started Stage-3 helping the same families who are still isolated and need help.
